Meridian Group’s Cyber Intelligence Weekly Update

Our new Cyber Intelligence Weekly Report covers various highlights of the past week. The principal events:

  • Russia orders Yandex to black out maps: A Russian court has ordered Yandex to remove information about a strategic refinery that was hit by Ukrainian attacks. The decision raises concerns about the disclosure of sensitive images.
  • FireScam: Malware disguised as Telegram Premium: An Android malware poses as Telegram Premium to steal sensitive data. Spread via phishing, it exploits malicious permissions to maintain remote control of infected devices.
  • iCloud-themed phishing campaign: Fraudulent emails promise free storage space on iCloud to steal personal data and credit card information. Users are induced to enter information on phishing sites.
  • Alliance between Russia and North Korea: Fears grow of an exchange of advanced military technology between Russia and North Korea. Moscow could provide satellite support in exchange for North Korean armaments and troops.
  • Google accused of violating privacy: A class action lawsuit accuses Google of collecting data without consent even with tracking deactivated. The case could have repercussions for the entire technology sector.
  • EU court sanctions Commission: The European Commission has been fined for the unlawful transfer of personal data to Meta, ruling that EU institutions must also comply with the GDPR.
  • Elon Musk, the AfD and digital regulation: Elon Musk is accused of favouring political interference after a live chat with the leader of the AfD. The event raises questions about the role of big tech in the European democratic process.
  • CERT-AGID and ClamAV in the IoC stream: CERT-AGID introduced support for the ClamAV format to improve cybersecurity in academic and institutional settings, responding to community needs.
  • US challenge on TikTok: TikTok faces risk of ban in US over national security fears. The Supreme Court will consider the case, at the centre of tensions between digital freedom and technological control.
  • Crisis in Venezuela: During protests against Maduro, opponent Maria Corina Machado was arrested and released. The opposition denounces electoral fraud and government repression.
  • Scandal at ICAO: ICAO investigates leak of personal data linked to recruitment. The incident underlines the need to strengthen IT security in international organisations.
