Meridian Group’s Cyber Intelligence Weekly Update

Our new Cyber Intelligence Weekly Report covers various highlights of the past week. The principal events:

  • The name of the Ministry of Health used for computer fraud: A phishing campaign uses the logo of the Ministry of Health to obtain personal and banking data. Victims are asked to enter data on a counterfeit page to receive a fake refund. The strategy involves double requests to steal data from two credit cards.
  • Elon Musk, controversy over gesture during Trump’s inauguration: Elon Musk is accused of a controversial gesture during Trump’s inauguration, likened to a Nazi salute. The Anti-Defamation League rejects the accusation, calling it an enthusiastic gesture. Musk retorts by criticising the interpretations and defends his vision of the future.
  • Trump amid isolationism and controversy: Trump withdraws from WHO and Paris Agreement, escalates tariffs and graces supporters. Actions raise tensions with China and global criticism. Foreign policy highlights isolationism and scepticism towards international cooperation.
  • Star Blizzard exploits WhatsApp to gather sensitive data: Russian hackers target diplomats using fake WhatsApp groups. A QR code allows access to confidential information. The attack highlights vulnerabilities related to phishing and encrypted communications.
  • Huawei challenges Nvidia in AI chip market: Huawei aims at AI inference processors, countering Nvidia. The strategy aims to reduce Chinese dependence on foreign technologies. Technical and software problems remain significant obstacles.
  • Ransomware attacks via Microsoft Teams: Russian hackers exploit Teams to distribute ransomware, pretending to be technical support. Social engineering techniques facilitate sophisticated attacks. Victims are tricked through Microsoft Office 365 configurations.
  • Terrorism, 30-year-old ISIS affiliate arrested in Naples: A Moroccan man planned attacks against the Jewish community. He propagated ISIS materials and prepared violent actions. The arrest highlights the effectiveness of counter-terrorism investigations in Italy.
  • Iran and Russia strengthen cooperation in cyberspace: A strategic agreement intensifies cooperation between Iran and Russia in cybersecurity. Both countries seek to limit external technological dependence. Measures include censorship and regulation of the internet.
  • Trump signs an executive order on cryptocurrencies: Regulations on cryptocurrencies and the creation of a digital reserve are introduced in the US. The creation of CBDCs is banned to protect the private market. The industry welcomes the regulatory changes.
